Understanding The Loss of a Pet
Our
pets provide many things for us. They offer us companionship and
unconditional love and acceptance. They are a comfort to us in times of
need. They are a source of joy and happiness and provide fun and
entertainment. Often they are our closest confidant gaurding
all of our secrets. They are faithful to a fault and forever
patient with our little quirks. Our pets are a significant and
constant aspect of our lives and for many people their pets are as
family members. The loss of such a relationship will most
certainly come with a great deal of pain and grief.
Not
everybody understands how strong the human and animal bond can be and
therefore may not understand the grief and sadness you feel over the
loss of a beloved pet. However, you should never allow someone
else to tell you that you are foolish or overly sentimental for
grieving over the loss of a pet. These feelings are totaly
natural and normal. The grieving process over the loss of a pet
is no different than that over the loss of person, the difference lies
only in the value placed on people over pets in our society. Not
everyone can grasp what blessings that our pets can be.
When
your pet dies it is important that your feelings of pain and loss be
acknowledged by those close to you even if they do not feel the same.
This is not always the case and your grief may be compounded by the
lack of response from those closest to you. It is important to
seek validation for feelings from people who understand your pain and
sense of loss. You may want to start with your veterinarian,
often they are able to refer you to pet grief support groups and
bereavement counselors. You may also find help from a
number of online pet loss groups. Please feel free to visit our
Pet Loss Resource page for a list of groups dedicated to helping you
cope with losing a pet. You are also invited to share a tribute to your
beloved pet on our Pet Tributes page.
| Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge.
When an animal dies that has been especially close to
someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge.
There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can
run and play together.
There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and
comfortable.
All the animals who had been ill and old are restored
to health and vigor; those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong
again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by.
The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each
miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind.
They all run and play together, but the day comes when
one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent;
His eager body quivers. Suddenly he begins to run from the group, flying
over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster.
You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend
finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted
again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the
beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet,
so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart.
Then you cross Rainbow Bridge together….
